Kathryn is no stranger to terrorist actions aimed directly at her. In The Elusive Peacock, author Susan Smocer Platt took her strong, independent protagonist through nightmarish events aimed at “shutting her up” because she is an outspoken woman standing up against groups that want to silence women and force their will on whole communities.
In this tale, we’re back in northern Virginia’s bucolic countryside -Village of Lincoln – more and more the stronghold of virulent militia and other ultra-conservative groups. Operating under cover of darkness, these groups of angry men that will go to terrible lengths to silence opposition to their forceful, unwanted agenda. If they have their way, the whole population will soon be subjected to their oppressive tactics.
Enter, Kathryn and a new group of brave women and male cohorts that forms to stand against these men – who will using threat, kidnapping, and overt violence trying to bring their opponents to heel.
Fortunately, there are strong, brave men who step up beside the women to help in their battle – including a possible love interest for Kathryn, a widower whose wife was likely eliminated by this same group of terrorists.
What’s more, a secret force has infiltrated Kathryn’s group to spy on their plans and activities.
Strong as Kathryn is, she recognizes her vulnerability one night, when an attack out of the darkness comes within inches of taking her life – which, nonetheless, strengthens her resolve to counter this violent force before it takes over.
